It’s been a while since we last saw Liverpool’s midfield, with the club missing out on a Champions League spot thanks to injuries.
With the team still in turmoil, it looks like this is the time to step it up and put an end to their current slump.
The Reds were hoping that the injury woes of the squad would help to make up for the absence of their star man, Philippe Coutinho.
Coutinho has been ruled out of the season-opener against Borussia Dortmund, while Mario Balotelli is also out due to a groin injury.
However, the injury troubles have seen the squad miss out on the chance to put in a solid performance against their neighbours.
While Liverpool will have to rely on some luck to beat the mighty Champions League side, the squad should have a great chance to take on the likes of Manchester United, who beat Liverpool 1-0 last time out.
Ahead of the game, we spoke to the Reds’ captain, Steven Gerrard.
He told us that the squad is ready to face Manchester United in a game of attrition.
“We are not playing a game that we think we will lose, but we have got to make sure we have a gameplan to go out there and fight for every ball and try to win the game,” Gerrard said.
“The first game we played last season, Liverpool went into that game with a bit of confidence, and we went into it knowing that we would play well, but then they beat us 1-1.”
It was disappointing, but now we know we have to be ready to take a game to Manchester United.
They have got a fantastic team, and I know they have the resources to make a strong challenge for the title.
“Last season we went to Manchester to face them and lost, so we know what it is like to lose, so it is going to be an eye-opifying game.”
As well as a Liverpool squad that is hungry to prove they can beat the United side, there is also the chance of a top-of-the-table Liverpool team, who would like to secure a top four spot.
This is the club that was able to reach the last four of the Champions League, but Liverpool have yet to reach that level.
