President Donald Trump is set to travel to the United States’ largest healthcare facility on Thursday, where he will discuss the state of the nation’s health system, as he seeks to bolster support among Republicans for a massive expansion of the federal government’s role in the healthcare industry.
Trump will visit the National Institutes of Health (NIH) on Wednesday, a day after he and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell unveiled a proposal to expand funding for the agency by $500 billion over the next decade.
The proposal was aimed at ensuring that federal health workers have more flexibility and the ability to treat patients at home, a key Trump campaign promise.
It has not yet been approved by Congress.
The White House has said the president will “talk about the progress that has been made over the past six months in improving the nations health care system.”
“We need more funding for this great program, and we will use this opportunity to move forward,” Trump said.
“Were going to get it done.
And well keep talking about it.”
McConnell said in a statement that the president will address the NIH in a positive way.””
Trump has also been vocal about his desire to create a new government-run healthcare system. “
We want to make sure we do all we can to support the NIH and its mission.”
Trump has also been vocal about his desire to create a new government-run healthcare system.
In the early weeks of his presidency, he repeatedly said he wanted to bring the nation into the 21st century with a single-payer system.
But a year ago, after several congressional failures to deliver on that promise, he told supporters that the federal healthcare system was broken.
The president has been vocal in his support of the National Health Service Corps (NHSC), which provides private insurance to more than 3 million U.S. citizens, which would be the first private-sector-run system in the country.
The administration has not said what it will do with the NHSC money that was earmarked for the CDC.
The NIH is also working to establish a new Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) agency to oversee healthcare and veterans services.
Trump also is expected to visit the CDC on Thursday.
The CDC is an umbrella agency that encompasses the nations most important public health research and development programs.
Its $500bn annual budget includes about $1 trillion for grants and contracts.
The Trump administration has also signaled its intention to spend about $2 billion to establish the Centers for Cybersecurity and Information Technology, or CENTCOM.
The U.N. Security Council approved the creation of CENTCOM in January 2017.
The announcement came amid a major U.K. hacking attack that forced the British government to cut off access to the countrys internet and shut down many of its businesses.
The attack has since been attributed to North Korea.
